Those of us who passionately desire to NOT be prolonged by extraordinary means owe a great debt of gratitude to Terry Schiavo. Like her, being young and believing I was immortal, I had not taken the necessary steps to create a Living Will making my wishes clear legally. However, as I witnessed (in the early 90's) the absolute nightmare that her life had become, it was the motivation I needed to get those legal documents taken care of. Thank you, Terry.
My heart totally breaks when I see the nightmare she's living under. And this morning on Good Morning America, Tom Delay had the audacity to say something about the Florida laws don't allow this to happen to a dog. Well, I'd like to know the last time he saw a dog on feeding tubes. I don't remember ever seeing a dog on life support - do you? And this from a man who the Ethics Committee wanted to investigate - until the House suddenly decided to change the rules and not allow Ethics Committee investigations (read "Mother Jones" magazine - a few months back, December?). How Clinton would have loved that!
Terry's husband, Michael, has said the only doctors who find her conscious are those who haven't actually seen her, only videos of her. They also interviewed Michael this morning on Good Morning America. I fully support his love of Terry to honor her wishes regarding her own life.
Aside from my Living Will, let me state again - do NOT keep me alive just for the sake of existing! It's my strongest wish that my worldly resources not be expended to the medical community. I've got a long list of places I'd prefer any money I have to go, and the medical community is nowhere near even on that list. I'm just grateful my parents aren't so controlling that they can't let me go! By no stretch of the imagination do I consider what Terry's living like to be Living - I want NO PART OF IT!
Again, thank you Terry for showing me by your example and the nightmare you now find yourself in how urgently all of us need those legal documents that permit others from doing this to us. I'm also grateful that you're not conscious to see this horror.
Being a Christian, I'd much prefer to die and go Home. I once had a vacation in Switzerland. It was wonderful. But when I showed up at the airport to return home, my flight had been cancelled. I spent the next two days stuck in Switzerland very anxious and deeply desiring to go home. That's what I think of for Terry. She's stuck in the airport and can't leave - she can't go Home. Let her go!

Update on ANWR
Whew! Just learned that Senate vote was to try to "disconnect" the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge part from the budget, which it should be - but that was voted down. For now, our Refuge is still safe. Hope/Pray it remains so!

Oil Drilling in Arctic Wildlife Refuge
I have some very bad news - you may have already heard. They've voted to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling....a vote of 51 to 49 I'm told. I am in deep mourning.
My initial response was livid rage (or as much as Jewell is capable of). The American people have told them over and over that we don't want this. But I guess the will of the American people no longer governs what Congress decides - special interest groups do. Guess it's not enough that Bush rapes Iraq - he has to rape us, too. And they claim they're Christians.
If they only raised gas mileage in cars and trucks to what it was in the 80's - that would more than account for any oil in the NAWR. OR...if they only explored alternative fuels. But no! They insist on devastation and destruction of a REFUGE. Does that word have no meaning anymore?!?
They claim they now know how to pollute and destroy less than they used to. I don't believe them. I mean really! Their track record is ZIP, 0, nada! Exxon has YET to pay for the Valdez disaster over 15 years ago.
I'm finding solace in Rev 11:18, "The time has come for judging the dead.....and for destroying those who destroy the earth." I find comfort in this for two major reasons: 1) God will exact judgment upon those who cause such destruction; and 2) God already knew this earth would be
destroyed. It's exceptionally hard for me to watch it, but the Bible says it will happen. The joy comes in Rev 21 when God reveals a new heaven and a new earth; and also in Matthew 5:5 where Jesus promises the meek will inherit the earth.
This is my highest motivation for taking the photos I take. To quote from Edward Abbey, "It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it is still there. So get out there...."
