Hurricane Frances came through on Tuesday and Wednesday dropping much rain. As a result, Asheville is now flooded, and I mean rather seriously. In fact, the indoor plumbing I’ve looked so forward to is now non-existent throughout most of the city. Apparently our water comes from the North Fork Reservoir, and the two main pipes pulled apart with the flooding. They’re working now to get that fixed, but it may take overnight or longer. Whenever it does come back on, we’re told we need to boil for 3-5 minutes minimum any "potable" water for the next 24 hours. Isn’t this fun!?! At least in Montana we knew to prepare for a lack of water, and had water barrels and psychological preparation. This caught Ben and I unawares.
Biltmore Village is all flooded out. There were all kinds of small shops down there. On the news they said most of those shops did not have flood insurance. A lady at the spa said her daughter saw an antique chair just floating by in the river. Also, where Dreamland Flea Market used to be and Lowe’s is now - River Road - that’s all flooded. On the news tonight they showed a photo of that area with an oil tanker floating in the river (I think it was an oil tanker - a semi-truck at any rate). So, I guess water pollution will also be a concern now for awhile.
